17 die in Texas from West Nile virus, nearly 400 sick

An article appearing on MySinchew.com says that 17 have died in Texas as a result of being infected by the mosquito-borne West Nile virus.

According to the Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS), nearly 400 have become ill due to the virus. The article by AFP quotes a statement by the TDSHS as saying that “Texas is on track to have the most cases of West Nile illness since the disease first emerged in the state in 2002.”

Residents are being encouraged to use mosquito repellent and to use protective clothing.
