Taliban claims responsibility in death of 4 U.S. troops

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for an attack that killed four U.S. troops in Afghanistan, hours after the U.S. announced it was opening formal talks with the insurgent group. A Taliban spokesman said the group fired two rockets into the Bagram air base on Tuesday.

Earlier, the U.S. said direct negotiations with the Taliban will begin Thursday in Doha, the capital of the Persian Gulf country of Qatar, in a push to establish a framework for ending more than a decade of war in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan suspended negotiations with U.S.

Afghanistan has suspended negotiations with the U.S. on a bilateral security deal, in a dispute over proposed U.S. talks with the Taliban. A statement from Afghanistan’s National Security Council Wednesday cited “the contradiction between acts and the statements made” by the U.S. in regard to the peace process.

The U.S. talks with Afghanistan are focused on what American and coalition security forces will remain in the country after 2014.

North Korea wishes to have direct talks with U.S.

The United States says it is open to North Korea’s offer of direct talks, but only after Pyongyang takes concrete action to end its nuclear weapons program.

North Korea says it is offering direct talks to ease tensions on the Korean peninsula. The United States says North Korea must first meet its international obligations to end its nuclear program.

Introducing NASA’s new astronaut trainees

NASA has introduced eight new astronaut candidates, selected from a pool of 6,300 applicants.

The new astronaut trainees – Josh Cassada, Victor Glover, Nick Hague, Christina Hammock, Nicole Mann, Anne McClain, Jessica Meir and Dr. Andrew Morgan – have all dreamed of becoming space explorers. During the past year-and-a-half, they have passed rigorous medical and psychological evaluations, and have performed well during multiple tests and interviews. Now they are letting their families and employers know that they are changing careers, all in the pursuit of their dream.

Pitt-Greensburg graduate named AMCC Scholar-Athlete of the Year

coradiGREENSBURG, PA — David Coradi, a 2013 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, was recently selected as one of two Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Scholar-Athletes of the Year. Coradi, of Cranberry Township, was selected by the AMCC Faculty Athletics Representatives from a pool of 20 outstanding student-athletes named to the Conference All-Academic Team. Amber Grosch, a senior at Hilbert College, was the other award recipient.

Protesters in Turkey march ahead of planned strike

Protesters continued to demonstrate in the Turkish capital, Ankara, ahead of a nationwide strike Monday to express disapproval of the forced evictions of demonstrators from an Istanbul Park.

Ankara riot police used tear gas and water cannons to try to disperse thousands of protesters marching late Sunday. Some protesters pointed lasers at the police operating water cannons to get them to stop.
